Students gathered after school recently for Power Hour, a special event powered by the Youth League of the League of Women Voters. The session brought Illinois government representatives to Lake Park High School, giving students a rare opportunity to ask questions, share their perspectives, and learn firsthand how state leaders make decisions that impact their communities.
Featured speakers included Speaker of the House Chris Welch, State Representatives Michelle Mussman and Jennifer Sanalitro, Senator Seth Lewis, and Township Supervisor Jodie Hovde. The panel discussed current issues affecting Illinois and offered insight into how young people can get involved in civic engagement. Students asked questions about topics such as education, healthcare, and environmental policy.
Nicole Angel (LP ‘26), founder of the Youth League and student organizer of the event, said the goal was to make civic engagement more accessible to her peers.
“As the founder of the Youth League and event planner, I believe events like this are extremely needed, especially now,” Nicole said. “I wanted to give my peers opportunities for direct civic engagement, something that has often been lacking.”
She added that one of her favorite moments came after the panel discussion.
“At the end, over 65 students had the chance to speak one-on-one with the elected officials,” Nicole said. “It was incredible to see so many of my classmates connecting directly with the people shaping our state’s policies.”
Organizers hope to make Power Hour an annual tradition to continue fostering political awareness and community involvement among students.
