Established just last year, Lake Park High School’s debate club is designed to improve students’ debate, analytical, speaking, and critical thinking skills through competitive and non-competitive activities. Students interested in fields of law and politics, or just wanting to improve their speech skills, are encouraged to join this flexible club.
Debate Club co-founder Nicolas Novielli (LP ‘27) explained that the club was created to “give students the opportunity to practice debate.” He also said the club provides a space where students can explore their interests in law and justice. He described it as “all about improving and giving the extra push for students who either enjoy or struggle with public speaking, writing, etc.”
English teacher and club sponsor Ms. Sara Keith outlined the two main focuses of the club: competitive and non-competitive debate.
“Competitive debate is geared more for students who have taken debate courses at east campus and want to take their skills to the next level and compete with students outside of Lake Park. Non-competitive debate is for students who are looking to engage with Lake Park students only.”
Nicolas also mentioned “mock trials” as another activity the club plans to offer.
Ms. Keith described what a typical meeting looks like.
“A typical debate club meeting begins with a warmup activity where students engage in a discussion on a school issue or a cross-examination debate on social issues,” Ms. Keith said.
“Then, we look at opportunities for competitive debate and prepare for those. Students interested in debate within the school will have opportunities to engage in mock trials and debates in a non-competitive way.”
She also provided an upcoming competitive debate opportunity. The Coolidge Open is a local debate tournament that offers novice and intermediate level competition in both doubles or singles, scheduled for late October.
When asked about participation, Nicolas said, the club tries to be as flexible as possible.
“There is no prior experience to join; just bring your voice. We are accepting of all levels and plan to push you to be the best debater you can be,” Nicholas said. “Students can join whenever they want throughout the year, missing meetings does not make you any less of a member than anyone else.”
Miss Keith echoed Nicolas’ statements about participation and provided the club’s details.
“Debate club meets at west once a month on Mondays and at East once a month on Tuesdays. Join the Google Classroom for the latest information.” The class code is itcte766.
“Students interested in public speaking, law, and critical thinking will enjoy this club,” Ms. Keith said. “Students will become better at research, public speaking, and analytical skills. Students also learn how to remain composed and thoughtful while being cross-examined or someone argues against their claims.”
Nicolas concluded by saying, “Students would be setting themselves up for success by joining the debate club.” He highlighted the importance of the skills learned through debate being not only academically beneficial, but, “ just a good life skill in general.”
Debate Club is a valuable new opportunity for Lake Park students to improve their confidence, communication and skills both academically and out of the classroom.
