Lake Park runs the existing club called “Model UN” supported by social studies teachers Mr. John Powell and Mr. Scott Mackey. Students in the club imitate the countries who are a part of the United Nations and how they might address some issues in the world. It started in 2022 by two junior students who wanted to explore the program. Over the years more students joined and the club grew to what it is today.
Model UN is a great way to learn about how problems are solved in the real world and the complexity of how decisions are made. Members of the club have the opportunity to attend several conferences over the course of the school year. Through joining this program, students consider professions in this field. “It also gave me insight into potential career paths in international relations that I might have overlooked,” Gabriel Bernales (LP ‘28) said.
The conferences also award some participants with scholarships depending on how they performed and how well they wrote their position paper. A position paper is a way for students to create an understanding of the issues that will be discussed at the conference.
Students learn many important skills during these events that can benefit them later in life. The conferences play a big part in that “Conferences early in the year focus on the fundamental skills of the program, while later in the year the emphasis is placed on problem solving and debate skills,” Mr. Powell said.
These are abilities that can help teenagers as they enter the real world and navigate high school. Public speaking, meeting new people, and learning interesting concepts are all benefits of joining Model UN. Acting as representatives for real countries can help kids learn resolution and leadership skills.
Anyone in any grade can join Model UN; if you are interested or want to learn more, you should consider joining to explore all different kinds of fields while you are young so you are prepared for college.
