Scholastic Bowl is a competitive academic quiz game where students answer questions on diverse subjects like history, literature, and science. It encourages teamwork, quick thinking, and a broad knowledge base. Participating in Scholastic Bowl helps improve recall, critical thinking, and communication skills. Teams compete against each other, fostering a sense of camaraderie and school spirit. It’s a fun way to engage with learning beyond the classroom and challenge oneself intellectually.
Scholastic Bowl has many factors on why it’s a good club to join with an interesting system and game.
“Two teams face off against each other using a buzzer system. The first question is called the toss-up. Whichever team answers the toss-up question gets points and is awarded the first opportunity to answer the bonus questions. Following the toss-up a series of three bonus questions are asked (usually from a completely different topic). There are typically 22-24 questions in a competition and the winner is the team with the most points,” Samarth Majmudar (LP’ 25) said. Samarth won first place as an individual in the Dukane Conference competition this year.

Scholastic Bowl has been around Lake Park for a while, and it wasn’t a huge club. However, in recent years, participation has increased.
“Before I was a freshman, the team wasn’t very competitive,” Samarth said. “Brooklyn had only two kids involved, and even when Lake Park had a few kids, we were near the bottom of the standings. After Mr. Powell took over and recruited talented players, the team improved significantly in just three years. My sophomore year was rough because we didn’t know trivia as well as other teams. But by my junior year, we improved–got third place–and then second place the following year. We only lost to Glenbard North by 10 points, and they’re one of the best teams in the state. It’s impressive how much we’ve improved, going from the bottom to being one of the strongest teams.”
Scholastic bowl suddenly had become a much more competitive club in Lake Park with more people than ever, causing a greater need for collaboration.
“It can be tough. If you’re unsure of the answer, multiple people will start guessing. As captain, it’s hard to manage everyone, especially when you’re not sure of the answer. I struggled with this when I was captain last year. The hardest part is communicating with your team, especially when you’re not confident in your answer. But you just need to work together and figure it out” Samarth said.
The club is also planning to improve in the future to provide a better experience for students.
“We are looking forward to adding new members and improving in various categories going into next year. Scholastic Bowl is a great opportunity for students to meet other Lake Park students as well and meet other students from around the state. We are ALWAYS looking for new members to join the fun!” Mr. John Powell said.
So if you are looking for a fun club with fierce competition, join Scholastic Bowl.
