In January, Lake Park theater puts on plays called One Acts. These plays are short and only run for one act, unsurprisingly. They are often play adaptations of popular shows and movies. In the past, One Acts have included South Park, Tinkerbell, and Dance Moms.
However, they are different from all other plays since they are completely composed of students, directors included. One Acts are a chance for seniors to direct and even write their own plays for an audience.
While One Acts are shown for students and families in January, they begin rehearsing these plays early in November. Before rehearsing though, there is a unique audition style. When casting for these plays, the student directors all sit in a room and have students read a monologue for them, which isn’t unusual. With this though, students do not read the monologue of the character they want to get. Instead, they read the monologue of their choosing and get placed into any of the One Acts, based on the directors and what they are looking for. The student directors then claim the actors they want for their short plays, and cast lists are released.
Here is a sneak preview of what the One Acts are this year:
Scream: directed by Luke Thomas and Kylene Murphy; this One Act will be the classic thrasher movie in play format. Get ready for a scare!
Twilart: A Twilight Saga Parody, directed by Evelyn Voyles and Niki Boos; people seem to either love or hate Twilight–but what about the parody? Edward and Jacob fans unite!
Superbad: directed by Julian Mostowski; this play will be a unique take on the well-known coming-of-age movie.
Lego Batman: directed by Leo Troutman and Emily Rusin; this will be a new take on the comedic Batman movie. Get ready for a laugh!
Gossip: written and directed by Zenith Alvarez; this is a student-written musical about life as a queer kid in the 1970’s.
Psych: stage adaptation by Cyrus Tuz, Anthony Johnson, and Daisy Rimer; this show-turned-play is about a psychic who helps the police solve mysteries. Can you figure out whodunnit?
Regular Show: directed by Meya Wiggens and Avery Madison; the Regular Show is a hilarious cartoon of two friends going on adventures. Join them in their next one!
Gravity Falls: directed by Julia Kelly and Cam Helgeson; this show of two kids and their journeys in an unusual town will be coming to the stage!
