The college application process is always demanding, but November 1st deadlines can make it feel downright overwhelming for senior Lancers.
In a period of adjustments to senior year such as academic and personal challenges, students face the added stress of preparing applications that influence their futures. The early deadline is often a deadline students follow due to scholarship opportunities otherwise nonexistent in regular decisions. This intense application cycle causes more stress for students who need financial assistance with their future. As Lancers rush to compile essays, recommendations, and transcripts by November 1st, the process can often feel like a test of endurance rather than a thoughtful journey towards higher education.
The November 1st deadline is available for students who want college answers sooner and for more scholarship opportunities which is beneficial for those competitive students. There is also the added idea that applying early sets students up for demonstrated interest and a sign of students being very set in their future plans; both ideas explained before almost always gives students a leg up in college admission. By receiving admissions decisions by December, this can help reduce the stress of waiting months and allow students to start planning for their future sooner.
Lastly, the early options have higher acceptance rates such as University of Miami. By applying early, students can improve their chances of being admitted to selective colleges, especially if they have a strong application ready by the deadline.
While early action and early decision are intended to help students show commitment and gain an advantage, there is an impact on students by setting these deadlines. Some students opt out of the deadline so they can have more time to refine their applications without compromising their mental health. Alternatively, colleges could offer rolling deadlines for early applicants, giving students more choice about when they’re ready to submit. This would allow students who need more time for personal reasons, or those needing additional resources, the chance to apply without penalty.
Whether Lancers choose to apply early or at the regular deadline, they will find their future at college eventually.
