November 11th is Veterans Day. Veterans day is a very special holiday that celebrates our veterans and their services to our country. It is a great time to show our appreciation and recognize the sacrifices that our veterans have made. Veteran’s Day falls on November 11th every year, because it is on the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice (truce) that ended World War I.
Veterans Day has lots of interesting history. For example, Veteran’s Day was once called Armistice Day, but that was changed in 1954. Armistice Day was a tribute to the end of World War I, but it was later changed to honor all veterans of all wars, and it became Veterans Day. A more in-depth explanation on Military.com says, “‘Armistice Day’ became ‘Veterans Day’ as the holiday evolved from commemorating the end of WWI to honoring all U.S. veterans. In 1954, after the U.S. had gone through the devastation of World War II and the Korean War, the scope of the holiday broadened.”
At the urging of veterans service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by replacing the word “Armistice” with “Veterans.”
Another fun fact about Veteran’s day is that it has developed into a day that doesn’t just remember our veterans who served in wartimes, but also to recognize veterans who have served in peacetimes (a time when a country is not at war).
Veteran’s Day is a very important holiday because we celebrate and honor the Veterans of America and their services to our country. We get to thank the veterans of our country, pay our respects, recognize their contributions to our country, thank them for keeping us safe, and appreciate their sacrifices.
There are many activities to take part in that can show our appreciation for our veterans. Many events and tributes take place around Veterans Day that can help a veteran feel appreciated and supported.
Around the United States, many places have ceremonies, parades and other special events in honor of the veterans of our country. This year, Lake Park encouraged students and staff to dress up in recognition of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, or to wear red, white, & blue in support.
